  • The Department of Biological Sciences at KAIST is an integral part of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), the first research-oriented science and engineering university in Korea. We offer a systematic and comprehensive research environment alongside undergraduate and graduate education in the most advanced fields of life sciences. Our mission is to provide world-class education and conduct groundbreaking research across diverse disciplines within life sciences and biotechnology. Building on these achievements, our department has been recognized since 1999 as a premier research-oriented education program through the Brain Korea 21 (BK21) initiative supported by the Ministry of Education.
  • The roots of our department date back to 1971. To foster the growth of both life sciences and biotechnology, the Department of Biological Science and Engineering was founded at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science (KAIS), which was then a graduate-only institution. Since its founding, the department has served as a central hub for education and research, playing a vital role in sharing advanced life science technologies with society.
    Following the opening of the undergraduate program at the Korea Institute of Technology (KIT) in 1985, the department integrated with the KAIS graduate program in 1989 to form a comprehensive educational system encompassing both levels.
  • Our undergraduate and graduate curricula are meticulously designed to foster creative research skills and to prepare students to become leading scientists at the forefront of technological advancement.
    Today, the department is home to 40 distinguished faculty members and state-of-the-art facilities. We are leading cutting-edge research in genomics, nanotechnology, artificial intelligence (AI), and molecular structures using high-resolution imaging. Our primary research areas include human diseases and their molecular mechanisms, neuroscience, stem cells and regeneration, and AI-driven biotechnology. Through these efforts, we continue to contribute to the future of life sciences.
  • KAIST 생명과학과는 우리나라 최초의 연구중심 종합 이공계 교육기관인 한국과학기술원(KAIST)에 소속되어 있으며, 생명과학의 첨단 분야에서 학부 및 대학원 교육과 함께 체계적이고 폭넓은 연구 환경을 제공하고 있습니다. 우리 학과는 생명과학 및 생명공학의 다양한 분야에서 세계적 수준의 교육과 연구를 수행하는 것을 목표로 하고 있습니다. 이러한 성과를 바탕으로, 우리 학과는 1999년부터 교육부 BK21(두뇌한국21) 사업을 통해 국내 최고 수준의 연구중심 교육 프로그램을 운영하는 학과로 선정되어 왔습니다.
  • 우리 학과의 출발은 1971년으로 거슬러 올라갑니다. 당시 생명과학과 생명공학의 발전을 함께 도모하고자, 대학원 과정만을 운영하던 한국과학원(KAIS)에 생물공학과(Department of Biological Science and Engineering)가 설치되었습니다. 설립 이후 우리 학과는 첨단 생명과학기술을 사회에 확산시키는 교육과 연구의 중심지로서 중요한 역할을 수행해 왔습니다.
    이후 1985년 한국과학기술대학(KIT)에 학부과정이 개설되었고, 1989년 KAIS의 대학원과 통합되면서 학부와 대학원을 아우르는 종합 교육 체계를 갖추게 되었습니다.
  • 우리 학과의 학부 및 대학원 교육과정은 학생들이 창의적인 연구역량을 기르고, 생명과학기술의 발전을 선도하는 우수한 생명과학자로 성장할 수 있도록 체계적으로 구성되어 있습니다.
    현재 우리 학과는 40명의 우수한 교수진과 첨단 연구시설을 갖추고 있으며, 특히 유전체학과 나노기술, 인공지능 (AI), 분자 구조 및 고해상 이미징을 중심으로 한 최첨단 연구를 수행하고 있습니다. 주요 연구 분야로는 인간 질환과 그 분자적 기전, 뇌신경과학과 줄기세포 및 재생, AI생명공학 및 그 응용 등이 있으며, 이를 통해 미래 생명과학기술 발전에 기여하고 있습니다.
